There’s nothing quite like the magic of seeing your wedding day play back on Super 8 film. The flicker, the soft grain, the warmth. It hits different, especially when mixed in with modern 4k footage.

To make your wedding video as beautiful as possible, I love blending different focal lengths, mixing up the shutter speed for a drag effect, adding a ton of drone footage, and a little Super 8 footage is another ingredient to add even more variety.

As a Hawaii wedding videographer, I’ve learned that capturing the emotions, memories, and special moments with different perspectives is one of the keys to making wedding films that stand out.

What Makes Super 8 So Special

Super 8 isn’t about perfection, and that’s the appeal. It’s about the nostalgic look, one that takes you back in time. The shaky footage. The grain. The perfection is in the imperfection.

Each reel of real Super 8 film lasts just a few minutes, but it’s crazy how every clip looks good. Mix that nostalgic film grain with digital footage, and you get the best of both worlds. It’s nostalgic and modern.

Why Oʻahu Is the Perfect Setting for Super 8

Oʻahu gives Super 8 film its dream playground. From golden hour at The Four Seasons to the sea breeze rolling through Paliku Gardens or a quiet moment along the North Shore, the island’s light and color make every frame glow.

I’ve found that Super 8 captures Hawaii’s emotion in a way that digital alone can’t. I still prefer digital, and if you’ve seen my videos, you know I love the drone footage, but I also love the variety Super 8 adds.

How I Shoot Super 8 Wedding Videos

It may be controversial, but I believe in shooting both real Super 8 film and digitally styled Super 8 edits, depending on what fits your story and budget.

  • 🎞️ Real Super 8 film: shot on vintage cameras, developed and scanned for that authentic nostalgic look. 90% of my Super 8 footage is from my Canon 512 XL camera, made in the late 1970s.
  • 💻 Digital Super 8 style: filmed in 24p with vintage color tones, film overlays, and a touch of dust and grain — perfect for couples who want the vibe without the extra processing time. Perfect for an extra touch of creativity, and virtually indistinguishable from authentic Super 8..

You can even combine both for a hybrid film by using real Super 8 woven seamlessly into a cinematic digital story. You may love seeing the Super 8 camera capturing the footage, but you’ll love the digitally styled Super 8 clips in your video just as much.

Filming on a vintage Super 8 camera is a lot of fun. The most important thing is the outcome, of course, and I believe using all tools available is key to crafting a timeless wedding video.
