Sunset Ranch

Sunset Ranch is in the hills above Haleʻiwa on Oahu’s North Shore, about 60 to 70 minutes from Waikiki via the H-1 and Kamehameha Highway. The property sits between Waimea Valley and Pupukea-Paumalu, two of the island’s largest nature preserves, which is why the surrounding landscape feels so untouched. You are a short drive from Haleʻiwa Town, Turtle Bay Resort, and the famous beaches of the seven-mile miracle: Waimea Bay, Shark’s Cove, Pipeline, and Sunset Beach.

The distance from Waikiki is real, but Sunset Ranch handles it better than any venue on the island. Round-trip guest transportation is included in every package from anywhere on the North Shore, so guests staying in Haleʻiwa or at Turtle Bay are picked up and dropped off without coordinating their own logistics. Sunset Ranch is one of the most visually striking properties I get to film on. The estate sits up in the hills above Haleʻiwa, and from the ceremony sites you look out over the Pacific, the mountains, and the North Shore coastline all at once. Thirty acres gives a wedding real breathing room. Your ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception each get their own space, and the property has details you simply do not find at typical wedding venues: avocado and lychee orchards, botanical gardens, and horses grazing in the pastures.

I’ve filmed six or seven weddings at Sunset Ranch, and the all-inclusive model genuinely changes how the day feels. The vendors are pre-selected by Sunset Ranch, the timeline is tightly orchestrated by their team, and the couple is not fielding logistics questions on their wedding day. From behind the camera, I notice it. Everyone Sunset Ranch brings in is good at their job, the day runs on schedule, and the result is a polished experience where the couple actually gets to be present.

Visually, the elevated property is a gift. This is one of the best venues on Oahu for drone work, with open sky, minimal obstructions, and layers of ocean and mountain landscape in every aerial frame. On the ground, couples choose between Charlie’s Pond, the outdoor reception space under a sail cloth tent beside the water, and Sunset Stables, the indoor option with chandeliers and draperies. And the venue is true to its name. When the sun drops toward the ocean at the end of the night, the light up on that hillside is dramatic.

A property with a conservation story

Sunset Ranch is also a different kind of business than most wedding venues. The land sits under Hawaii’s first private conservation easement, established in 2010, and the owner, Greg Pietsch, runs the property around a sustainability mission that covers the land, the food it produces, and the community around it. The estate sits between Waimea Valley and Pupukea-Paumalu, two of Oahu’s largest nature preserves at 1,875 and 1,129 acres, so the ranch is part of a much larger protected stretch of the North Shore.

The property hosts therapeutic horsemanship programs, plants native trees, and donates food from its orchards. For couples who care about where their wedding dollars go, this is genuinely meaningful. Booking a wedding at Sunset Ranch directly supports keeping this land conserved and working.

The starting price is the first thing to be honest about. At $34,800 all-inclusive, Sunset Ranch is real money even by Oahu venue standards. The fair comparison, though, is apples to apples: a $10,000 venue rental plus a full vendor stack of coordinator, caterer, florist, DJ, officiant, and transportation can land at a similar total. The difference is less about price and more about model. Sunset Ranch is built for couples who want simplicity and polish, not for couples who want to assemble and customize every piece themselves.

That all-inclusive model is the second consideration. Florals, DJ, coordination, and catering are handled by Sunset Ranch’s pre-selected team, so you cannot bring your own preferred florist or DJ. Their site notes that outside planners are welcome but not needed, and in practice the typical mode is letting Sunset Ranch run the experience. If you have specific vendors you care deeply about, this venue may feel restrictive. The exceptions are photography and videography, which couples book independently.

The North Shore distance is the third. Sixty to seventy minutes from Waikiki is a real drive, and while the included transportation removes the logistics burden, elderly guests or anyone with accessibility needs should factor in the travel time. And finally, the conservation mission: for some couples it is a deciding factor, and if sustainability is not what drives your venue choice, that is fine too. Sunset Ranch delivers the wedding regardless. It is simply a venue where the beauty and the mission happen to be connected.
